Compulsory Subjects Overview

English Essay (100 Marks)

In the English Essay paper, it is required of the candidates to write their thoughts in pure English and articulate them. The writers, in the articles presented to them, get presented with a variety of topics ranging from education to law and order, constitution, economy and foreign affairs, governance and human rights and social and economic problems that are relevant to Pakistan, with only a word restriction of few thousand words. These are the criteria for evaluation: conceptual clarity, logical reasoning and the matching application of the English language.

The above is a (100 Marks) English (Precis, Comprehension & Translation).

This paper evaluates the ability of candidats in precis writing, comprehension, syntax, translation, grammar and thesaurus in the English language. The examination comprises several components:

Precis Writing: They will also need to compress a passage, provide a suitable topic yet somehow suggesting what it should be about.

Comprehension: Candidates have to respond to questions about a given passage using their own words.

Grammar & Vocabulary: Questions about the proper application of grammar rules, vocabulary and sentence structure are included.

Sentence Correction: There is a task that is given to candidates to find and correct grammatical errors of given sentences.

Grouping of Words & Pair of Words: Word is categorized according to his similarity or opposition in meaning; idioms, proverbs, antonyms, and synonyms are used effectively.

Essay, Precis, Comprehension & Translation (100 Marks) – in Urdu.

It is the same as English Essay where the Urdu Essay paper also asks candidates to organize their thoughts about various areas for Pakistan in a coherent fashion in Urdu. The criteria that should be evaluated are, clarity of thought, logical reasoning, and proficiency in the Urdu language. Moreover, candidates are to show their proficiency in precis writing, comprehension, grammar, word power, and translation from Urdu to English as well as from English to Urdu.

Islamic Studies / Ethics (100 marks)

This paper is divided into sections for Muslim and non-Muslim candidates, focusing on different aspects:

Islamic Studies: It covers topics from the introduction to Islam, the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), early Islamic history, human rights in Islam, how Islam has impacted the world, how Islam rules the life, ethics.

Ethics for Non-Muslims: It involves concentrating the study of religions through their surveillance,their contributions to the society, upholding of moral principles, human rights, unified religions and the theme of revelation.

Pakistan Studies (100 Marks)

In Pakistan Studies paper, candidates knowledge of Pakistan’s history, geography, society, culture, economy, regional dynamics, national security challenges, international relations, constitutional history, political evolution, foreign policy and socio-economic issues is examined. Topics covered include the Kashmir dispute, Afghanistan’s effect on Pakistan, problems with energy, governance problems, and the part that Pakistan plays in world affairs, among others.

Objective (General Knowledge) = 100 Marks.

This objective paper tests candidates’ exposure to current affairs, historic events, socio-economic and political issues, regional/internal relations, scientific knowledge, environmental studies, food sciences, mathematics and computer sciences, as well as general facts. It is expected of the candidates to demonstrate updated knowledge and understanding on a wide range of subjects.

Optional Subjects Groups Overview Select by defined criteria about the subject to form the groups.

The PMS exam provides a choice of subjects in a variety of categories, out of which the candidates can pick three different subjects of different groups. The optional papers carry 200 marks each and the total for the optional papers is 600 marks. The optional subjects include commerce, economics, business administration, public administration, agriculture, veterinary science, botany, zoology, mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, geology, geography, political science, history, law, mass communication, philosophy, psychology, sociology, social work, English literature, Urdu, Arabic, education, Persian, Punjabi and many other subjects.
